Marc Broklawski is the product of public schools. He’s the husband, brother, and grandson of public school teachers, and the son of an educational support professional. He’s the proud dad of two great kids in public schools.

Now Marc is running for Stafford County School Board because he knows schools are the backbone of our community. He will support teachers, and every educator who impacts our kids’ lives, while bringing transparency and accountability back to the Board so that our voices can be heard.

Growing up in New York City and Long Island, Marc attended public schools from early education all the way through graduate school. His father helped low-income families achieve homeownership, and his mother stayed home with Marc and his sister. When his father died at an incredibly early age, however, Marc’s mom returned to working outside the home for the first time in over a decade.

Watching his mother’s challenges and successes as she returned to the workforce, while also raising two kids, Marc learned that success would take more than just a college degree – it would require a tireless work ethic, the skills to manage time effectively, and the ability to work as a team and collaborate to solve problems creatively.

Thanks to those lessons from his mother, Marc graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and a Master of Science in Computer Science and Engineering, with a concentration in Artificial Intelligence.

It was there in graduate school, as a teaching assistant and research assistant, that Marc first brought his mind for science to the challenges of education in the modern era: investigating strategies to enhance middle school and undergraduate students’ vocabulary-building skills for the critical work of developing their STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) competency.

After completing his graduate studies, including a fellowship in partnership with NASA and Cornell University, Marc moved to Virginia to pursue his career as a civilian computer scientist in the United States Navy. He has since served our country and our Commonwealth for 18 years, developing strategic plans, overseeing contracts and capital investments, and managing a nationwide portfolio of infrastructure, telecommunication, service desk, and collaborative services projects.

Throughout his career, Marc has focused on building broad coalitions of stakeholders to improve efficiency and save money so that resources can be deployed where they’re needed most – giving taxpayer value for their dollar, and making the biggest impact possible. He’s already brought this experience to his work with the Capital Improvement Planning and Multicultural committees created by the Stafford County School Board.

Now, Marc’s diverse range of technical and business experience will be an asset to the Stafford County School Board as we prepare our schools, our kids, and our community to meet the challenges of reimagining education in a technological age.

Marc has lived in Stafford for 17 years with his wife Amanda — a public school teacher and a proud member of the Spotsylvania Education Association — and their two children.
